Academic Details

Accreditation
The Aspect ILAs are registered by the New Zealand Ministry of Education and courses are accredited through the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA). Aspect ILA New Zealand is a signatory to the NZ Ministry of Education Code of Conduct for the support and welfare of international students.

Your First Day at Aspect ILA
All students begin your first Monday with Orientation and Placement Testing and then begin your classes on an Afternoon Shift that day. Your host family will show you how to use the public transport to and from school.

Premier Intensive
Our Premier Intensive course provides the fastest and most effective way for most people to learn English. The course uses communicative English language teaching and concentrates on the four skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing - vocabulary development, pronunciation, fluency practice, conversation skills and practice and extension of grammatical structures.

Premier
If you want to combine language studies with sightseeing and an active social life, this is the course for you. Lessons may be scheduled for the morning or afternoon. Academic Preparation Courses

Intensive IELTS
Many universities and institutes of technology require a language proficiency exam for entry. Our Intensive IELTS preparation course will help you to develop your skills in the areas of listening, reading, writing and speaking that are tested in the examination.

The Aspect ILA TOEFL preparation course has been developed to help you achieve your best in this internationally recognised exam. Our experienced teachers combine grammar and vocabulary lessons with practical test taking strategies to help you achieve your best score. Regular practice tests allow you to monitor your progress.

Cambridge Exam Preparation
The University of Cambridge Certificate examinations are widely known and accepted throughout the world. Aspect ILA has extensive experience in preparing students for success in these examinations. Sessions on exam techniques are included in the curriculum. You'll learn how to stay focussed during the exam and how to give the kind of answers that will achieve the highest marks. Aspect ILA Christchurch is the local examination centre.

English Plus


Internship
Fluent English skills are a valuable step towards career success. Our internship course gives you a headstart by combining a language course with a challenging work placement in a variety of fields.

 

Number of 45 minute lessons/week: 20 General English + 10 lessons electives first 4 weeks, then 8 weeks of Premier English plus part time internship.
Levels: Upper Intermediate to Advanced
Minimum Age: 18
Course Length: 12 weeks maximum
Class Size: Average 12, maximum 15

Other Information: Alternating timetable. Language test required before acceptance on to programme. Send CV and letter of motivation at least 8 weeks prior to commencement. All Internship placements are unpaid.




English for 50 Plus
Looking for a holiday with a difference? Revive your English skills while enjoying New Zealand's unique heritage, beauty and culture! Study English and take part in activities that let you experience New Zealand culture, sports and tourism. We've introduced 2 courses in Auckland that coincide with the America's Cup Challengers and Defenders yachting races. Homestay is with specially selected families of similar ages.

Foundation Art
For students who want a little more than English and the ability to apply it to a specific area, in conjunction with the Design and Arts College of New Zealand, we offer you the ability to study alongside New Zealand students on modules of their certificate or diploma programmes. You will study an introduction to art, design and photography, including painting, printmaking, 3D and life drawing.

 

Number of 45 minute lessons/week: 30, 4 weeks Premier Plus English then 9 weeks of intensive Art study at the Design and Arts College of New Zealand, alongside New Zealand students.
Levels: Intermediate to Advanced
Minimum Age: 16
Course Length: 10 weeks

English Plus Computer Graphic Design
If you have a flair for design and computers, put them together with the opportunity to learn English then study alongside New Zealand students at the Design and Arts College of New Zealand. Our course offers an introduction to the leading desktop publishing and design software, covering principles of design, typography, page layout, digital image editing and manipulation.

 

Number of 45 minute lessons/week: 30, 4 weeks Premier Plus English then 9 weeks of intensive Computer Graphic Design study at the Design and Arts College of New Zealand, alongside New Zealand students.
Levels: Intermediate to Advanced

University Foundation

The Lincoln University Certificate in Foundation Studies

Lincoln University is one of New Zealand’s oldest tertiary educational institutions. Established in 1878, Lincoln University enjoys a reputation for innovation and excellence in teaching and research in commerce and management, primary production and natural resources, science and social sciences.

The Foundation Studies course of study covers material intended to enhance student’s study skills and their ability to communicate. It builds on previous studies in disciplines required for degree study.

The Certificate is recognized by all New Zealand universities as a qualification which will enable recipients to apply for admission to a bachelor’s degree course.

The Lincoln University Certificate of Foundation Studies is offered at the Christchurch City campus of Aspect International Language Academies. This qualification is designed to equip students with the skills necessary to study successfully at university. Successful completion of the Certificate will allow students to apply for entry for undergraduate degree study at any New Zealand university.

What Qualification will I receive?
You will be awarded the Lincoln University Certificate in Foundation Studies.

What subjects will I study?
The Lincoln University Certificate in Foundation Studies is primarily aimed at students who will study an arts or commerce degree.

Each module comprises 60 hours of teaching time. In addition, you are expected to undertake some self-study. You should spend at least 40 hours per week on study in order to pass the course. This is a general guideline only.

What is the timetable?
You will receive a timetable at the beginning of each semester. Classes will be held between the hours of 8am and 6pm each day.

What academic level do I need to start the course?
All students must meet the entry criteria for admission to this course. These vary according to the country in which you have studied.

Applicants should apply for entry using the appropriate application form and attach verified copies of documents.

China Year 12 Senior High School Graduation Diploma with an average of 65%
Hong Kong HKCEE or GCE O Levels passes in 4 subjects (minimum C grade) Malaysia SPM, GPA 4 over 5 subjects

What about my English level?
If your previous education was not in English, you will be required to give evidence of your competence in English. The following English Language levels meet our entry requirements;

IELTS Academic module 5.5
TOEFL 500
CAE "B" Pass
CPE "C" Pass

What if my English is not good enough?
The Certificate in Foundation Studies is located on campus alongside Aspect International Language Academies (Aspect ILA), one of the largest providers of English language to international students in New Zealand. The center is the only Cambridge approved CELTA teacher training center in the South Island and is the Cambridge examination center in Christchurch city. Our teachers are all qualified. With over 22 years of experience in teaching English to international students, you know you can achieve your goals on time. The school teaches English to students from elementary to advanced level. Classes start every Monday.

Once your English level has reached the required level and you pass IELTS 5.5 or equivalent, you can move on to the Foundation Certificate on the next start date.

A pre-entry test is required for direct entry to the IELTS course. Most students will require a General English course prior to entry to IELTS.

Is there is minimum age?
The minimum age for this course is 16 years old.

What qualification do I get when I finish the course?
On successful completion of the course you will be awarded the Certificate in Foundation Studies, from Lincoln University.

To complete the certificate you must pass Part 1 and Part 2. To pass you must:
Obtain a minimum of 40% in each of the subjects
Obtain a minimum overall average of 50%.

You must pass Part 1 before you start Part 2.

What can I do when I finish the course?
This qualification will provide an entrance qualification for undergraduate study at any New Zealand university.

How much will it cost?
The tuition fee (2 semesters) for 2002 / 2003 is
NZ$14,000
US$ 6,500
In addition to the tuition fees you will require funds for textbooks and materials and living expenses.

Where will I live?
We can arrange hostel accommodation close to the school. Room only rates range from NZ$90- $120 week. Meals are additional. Some self-catering facilities are available.

Homestay accommodation can also be arranged. This is single room accommodation. Breakfast and dinner are provided through the week and full board at weekends. The cost in 2003 is NZ$180 per week, single room basis. Shared rooms are available.

What about my Student Visa?
You will require a Student Visa to come to New Zealand to study the Certificate in Foundation Studies.

Aspect ILA will provide you with the documentation you require for your pathway through English language and a conditional offer of place on to the Certificate in Foundation Studies. These are approved courses for Student Visa application.
Full details of visa and permit requirements, advice on rights to employment in New Zealand while studying, and reporting requirements are available through the New Zealand Immigration Service, and can be viewed on their website at www.immigration.govt.nz.

How do I apply?
Complete the application form. You must provide original or notarized copies of original documents. Faxed copies will not be accepted.

Please note:

  • The document must be in the name that you are enrolling under or be supported by evidence is a name change by deed poll or marriage.
  • Original documents will be returned, but it is preferable that you send verified copies.
  • We do not accept faxed copies.



Accreditation and Student Welfare
Aspect ILA has agreed to observe and be bound by the Code of Practice for the Pastoral Care of International Students published by the Minister of Education. Copies of the Code are available on request from this institution or from the New Zealand Ministry of Education website at www.minedu.govt.nz.

Aspect ILA New Zealand schools are registered with the NZ Ministry of Education and courses are accredited by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority. The Certificate in Foundation Studies had been approved by the New Zealand Vice Chancellors Committee for eligibility to apply for entry to any New Zealand university

The Aspect ILA schools are members of Education New Zealand, CRELS NZ (combined Registered English Language Schools of NZ) and FIELSNZ (Federation of Independent English Language Schools of New Zealand).

Aspect ILA is a division on Aspect Education Holdings Ltd (UK) and registered in New Zealand as ILA South Pacific Ltd.

Do I need to Have Insurance?
Most students are not entitled to publicly funded health services while in New Zealand unless they are:
A resident or citizen of Australia;
or A national of the United Kingdom in New Zealand;
or The holder of a temporary permit that is valid for two years or more.
If you do not belong to one of these special categories and you receive medical treatment during your visit, you will be liable for the full costs of that treatment. We strongly recommend that you have insurance that will cover the cost of medical treatment in New Zealand for the duration of your stay in New Zealand. We also strongly recommend that you obtain insurance to cover your travel to and from New Zealand.
Aspect ILA offer insurance. Please indicate on the application form if you wish to purchase this insurance.

Teacher Training

Who Is CELTA For?

It is an introductory course designed for candidates who have little or no previous English language teaching experience. It may also be suitable for candidates with some experience but little formal training. The course is highly regarded worldwide and its practical nature means that successful candidates enter the profession with basic teaching skills and a basis from which to develop as a teacher of English.

  • Candidates must be at least 18 years old by the start of the course.
  • They must have a standard of education that would allow them entrance to higher education in their country.
  • A degree is preferred but not essential.
  • They must have an awareness of language and a competence in English, both written and spoken, that enables them to undertake the course.
  • They must have the potential to develop the necessary skills to become effective teachers.

Assessment And Certificates

Assessment of all components of the course (teaching practice, four written assignments and professional development) is on a continuous basis and there is no final examination. The course is internally assessed but also externally moderated by an assessor who is approved by Cambridge. The final certificate is issued by Cambridge.

What Happens Next?

You will be invited to an interview, preferably face-to-face but telephone interviews can be arranged. After the interview you will be informed of your acceptance onto a course by mail.

Payment

Once you have been accepted on to a course we ask for a $300 deposit. When we have received this you will be issued with a pre-course task, which consists of 20 assignments (to be completed before the start of the course). The balance of $2700 is due 6 weeks before the start of the course. The options for paying will be outlined in your acceptance letter.
NB CELTA candidates are not usually eligible for student loans.
