We provide quality language tuition in a university environment. Our
staff are university graduates in ESOL with international teaching
experience and specialist interest in English for Academic Purposes.

Our classes are small (maximum 12) and located in classrooms on the
campus. Computer, audio visual and library facilities are available to
students as well as an independent learning centre.

We assist in arranging suitable accommodation, orientation programmes

English Language
Levels (Please note: a term is normally 14
weeks)
The syllabus for each level is carefully
designed, in consultation with the students, to meet the needs of each
individual and group. Students are taught in small classes (maximum 12)
and are taught using communicative teaching techniques in a pleasant and
friendly atmosphere. Certificates are awarded to all students who attend
regularly and successfully complete a course of study.

General
English Levels- minimum enrolment is 1 term (normally 14
weeks) |
General English levels are available up to the
intermediate level. They are taught using a communicative approach in
small classes. The levels cover writing, speaking, reading and
listening within an academic focussed environment. The main levels
are:
• Beginner
• Elementary
• Pre-Intermediate B and A
• Intermediate C, B and A

for Academic Purposes (EAP) Levels |
EAP for Cert FS:
English for Academic Purposes for the
Certificate in Foundation Studies and IELTS:
Level 1:
This level is designed for those students who are
intending to take IELTS and proceed onto the Foundation Studies
Programme at the University of Canterbury. Please contact the English
Language Centre for information on the testing dates of this level (duration
1 term).
EAP for Degree -
Undergraduate and Postgraduate:
English for Academic Purposes for Degree
Programmes and IELTS:
Level 1:
This level covers IELTS and IELTS testing, researched
essay writing and university study skills. It is designed for those
students who are intending to enter a university degree programme.
Please contact the English Language Centre for information on the
testing dates for this level (duration 1 term).
Level 2:
(Optional) This level is designed for students who wish
to further develop the study skills required for degree programmes (duration
1 term).

Foundation
Studies Programme |
The Foundation Studies Programme has two aspects:
- English language study skills
- Academic preparation
The subject options are:
- Commerce
- Arts
- Physical Sciences (Physics and Chemistry)
- Biological Sciences (Biology and Chemistry)
This programme operates February to November and
June to February.

Summer
Programme |
English for
Academic Purposes - Study Skills and Researched Essay Writing
This is a full-time English for Academic Purposes course for students
intending to undertake degree study at the start of the academic year.
The courses consist of University study skills (duration 1 term).
Academic Writing Courses
An intensive two-week full-time course designed to help students
develop writing skills for using English at university level. This
course is suitable for students intending to enrol at university and
for those already studying at university or other tertiary
institutions.
Requirements: Proficiency English Level equivalent to IELTS 6.0
and Band Score Writing 6.0.

Short
Term Courses |
These can be provided on request for groups of ten
or more. Minimum age limits apply (18 years or more) and the study
plan would normally involve a significant amount of English for
Academic Purposes oriented curriculum.
